Joining the Martin Keighley Racing Club

Racing Club Amabassors Zara Tindall and Kitty King

Becoming closely involved with Martin Keighley for a one-off annual payment of £500.

This was a new venture for Martin and Belinda Keighley, launched in 2016, and it has been a great success. They have an enthusiastic following across the country and, more specifically, locally in Gloucestershire and neighbouring counties, with many families enjoying their numerous wins not least at the home of National Hunt racing, Cheltenham. Many people don’t want the cost and commitment of actually owning a horse but want to be much more closely involved than just being a racegoer …. which is why the Martin Keighley Racing Club was established with a one-off annual payment per member of just £500. There are absolutely no further costs to pay.

Suitable horses are offered on a free lease to the Club so there are no capital costs whatsoever for Club members. There are lots of valuable benefits for the members, and there are always at least two horses for the members to follow and cheer on at the course.

One much appreciated aspect of the Club is the wide range of enjoyable events away from the racecourse such as stable visits, well-organised Club mornings at the yard with refreshments, an invitation to Martin’s annual Owners’ Day and lots of photos and videos updating all the Club members on the progress of their horses. Whenever the horses run there are 10 complimentary owners’ badges allocated by application on email (and by ballot if over-subscribed). There is a complimentary DVD and professional photo whenever the horse wins.

Here are some current members’ views:

“What a fabulous day it was watching Viking Mistress win her second chase under Champion Jockey, Richard Johnson. Can’t believe how much fun and success we’ve had from the Racing Club already. What a brilliant decision it was to join.” Fi Gamble.

“Without any doubt, if Carlsberg did racing clubs, they’d definitely do the Martin Keighley Racing Club. Probably the best racing club in the world.” Mick O’Gorman.

“I’ve been to more than ten race meetings this year as an owner. You get in free, or at worst pay only half price – then at the racecourses you get a free meal / tea or coffee all day. It’s amazing value.” Pete Wilson.

Viking Mistress, 9yo mare by Bollin Eric (GB) ex Mistress Caramore (Ire)

Viking Mistress was the star for the Martin Keighley Racing Club in 2017. She went into the season a 9yo maiden, but seemed to be galvanized by all her enthusiastic followers. To date for the Club she has run 13 times, finished in the first four on nine occasions, won two races under Rules, at Worcester and Southwell (on both occasions with Champion Jockey Richard Johnson on board) and once in a charity race at Chepstow under a magnificent ride from Martin’s assistant trainer Jamie Goldstein. During the course of the year her hurdle mark has risen from 88 to 115.

Throughout the season she has provided a tremendous amount of fun for all the Club members. When she won at Worcester, it was standing room only and our gallant mare was given the most wonderful reception as she came back into the winners’ enclosure. The general view was that the noise level generated would not have been out of place at the Cheltenham Festival. The winner’s room was overflowing with Racing Club members, all of whom toasted the Viking with Worcester’s complimentary champagne.

Doubtless the paddocks beckon for this lovely mare, and all of us are hoping that she finally manages to win a steeplechase before she retires. It’s been a privilege to follow her, and everyone is extremely fond of her.
