One of our Co-Owners, Tim Dykes, Shares his Experience of Owning Horses with Ownersfor Owners

I have been involved in owning several national hunt horses in various partnerships and syndicates over the last seven years.  This has generally been a good experience, with the inevitable ups and downs that one would expect.  When looking for a new horse last Autumn, I was introduced to Jon and Jack Hughes at the Cheltenham October meeting.  I was immediately impressed with their knowledge, enthusiasm and professionalism, and decided to take the plunge with shares in two of the Owners for Owners horses.  I am delighted with that decision!  The last nine months have been extremely enjoyable, and I have never felt closer to the action.  The network of trainers and advisers that Jon has developed are second to none, enabling owners to be involved in potentially useful horses in reasonable-sized partnerships.  The flow of information is constant, and both Jon and Jack are always accessible to answer any questions or listen to ideas.  The social side has been great too, with really enjoyable days at the races, regular stable visits and lots of contact with the trainers.  In summary, I have been made to feel like I own the horse alone, but with the financial and social advantages of sharing costs and experiences with like-minded people from a wide variety of backgrounds.  I am now buying into at least two of this year’s crop, and already can’t wait for the new sesason to begin.

Trainers’ Views on Owners for Owners ...

“Owners for Owners seems an excellent innovation – share the costs across six equal partners at a lower cost than conventional syndicates because there are no management fees.  I’ve known Jon Hughes for a number of years and wish him well.  I’m very supportive of the approach and will do everything I can to make it succeed here at Sandhill.” – Philip Hobbs

“Jon and Jack have been involved in the yard for several years, and we’re all hoping that Cross Of Honour will have a great season novice chasing.  They are very enthusiastic owners who love everything about National Hunt racing.  I’m looking forward to working with them to make Owners for Owners a real success.  The idea of “Joining Forces to Buy Better Horses” sounds good to me.” – Charlie Longsdon

“Racing is a tough game, and you’ve got to keep moving forward.  That means new ways of doing things.  Owners for Owners is part of this.  It will appeal to experienced owners who want to link up with like-minded people.  We’ll be doing everything we can to make it a success.  Jon and Jack are good at organising these partnerships.  And they’ve had a fair few winners with us!” – Elaine & Karl Burke.

“At Folly House we have a clear goal in mind – ‘Chasing Winners’.  Jon Hughes has been a big supporter of our yard since Day 1, and I’m really chuffed that Owners for Owners will be backing us in the future.  Jon is an enthusiast with a capital ‘E’ about national hunt racing, as well as patient and easy to get along with as an owner.  Here’s to every success in the years ahead.” – Jamie Snowden.

“One of our long-standing owners introduced us to Jon and Jacqueline Hughes and right from the first minute we felt in tune with the whole Owners for Owners approach.  Three months on, we now have our first horse - Primo Capitano, bought at the Brightwells Cheltenham sale in May - and he looks to be a very exciting prospect.  We can't wait for the new season to begin.”
Martin & Belinda Keighley

“Owners for Owners have some really experienced owners, one of whom, Jim Burley - who had previously owned our horse Regal Encore who came 2nd in the Cheltenham Champion Bumper - put us in contact with Jon and Jacqueline Hughes and we clicked immediately.  The whole idea of 'Joining Forces to Buy Better Horses' is right up our street.  We're delighted to be involved, and now have our first horse with them - a lovely Oscar 3-year-old store, bought recently in Ireland.  Looking forward to many similar horses in the years ahead.” – Anthony Honeyball

And Other Views of Co-Owners with Jon and Jacqueline Hughes ...

“I have been involved in a number of partnerships and joint ownership agreements with Jon Hughes and, without exception, they have been the most transparent and well-managed I have experienced.  I think Owners for Owners is a great concept and would not hesitate in recommending it to anyone considering pooled ownership involvement with other experienced owners.” – James Burley, ROA member & registered owner for 25 years.

“I’ve been involved in Flat horses with Jon and Jack for the last four years.  They’ve done all the admin and VAT really well.  There have been no problems at all.” – Dr. Chris Emmerson.

“I’ve known Jon and Jack Hughes for the last five years, and find them both enjoyable company and wholly reliable and trustworthy.  As far as finances are concerned, Jack is a solicitor and can be trusted to keep everyone informed with regular updates, as does Jon with the progress of the horses.  I personally trust them implicitly and thoroughly recommend them as seriously committed to racehorse ownership.” – Chris Guy.

“Jon and Jack Hughes are genuine enthusiasts of NH and Flat Racing.  It is great fun being involved with them in our horse. Jack is brilliant with the VAT administration, which means that we have no worries about the paperwork and can just enjoy the racing.”
Chris Booth

“The great thing about Jon and Jack is that they are closely involved with a strong mix of trainers, bloodstock agents, pre-training yards and other specialists.  This gives you real confidence that all the key decisions are taken in a way that maximise the chances of success.  I’m really looking forward to being involved in Owners for Owners and can readily recommend them to all experienced owners.”
Mark Bassington.

“As a lifelong racegoer, owning a racehorse had always been a dream, and I often researched syndicates, but was always put off by the huge numbers of people involved in each horse.  Owners for Owners seemed to offer the perfect solution, and has surpassed all my expectations.  We are now involved in a high-quality horse with potential, and have also met some great people to share the experience with.  Still looking for the catch, but there doesn’t seem to be one!” – Anna Yorke
